how many "hills" does it take to make a website?

Constructionpage

it takes two... two "hills" to make a greenbean art website page...

it begins with one mama hill to stay on the computer for four hours while the baby hills run around and play... it takes one daddy hill to do the laundry as the one mama hill cries from frustration... then it takes two baby hills to refuse to sleep while the one mama hill pulls out a few curls while trying to work on that webpage... then it takes one mama hill to freak out and get mad... so two adult hills argue a bit and one mama hill decides to play halo while daddy hill tries to start his webpage... it takes one daddy hill to stay up til 4am figuring it out while one mama hill sleeps even though the smallest baby hill wakes up... it takes two adult hills to apologize in the morning and it takes two adult hills to finally get the under construction page up...

it takes two... two "hills" to make a website page and to create a mighty night to remember... now, to think, these hills have to make two entire websites!

a nice way to begin the new year, right?! well, happy new year to you all and have a safe and peaceful night!

tea for two and rant for you...

Tea_mini

this was a commissioned illustration for a christmas present... vickie has ordered several illustrations [including this one] from me... her daughter wanted to surprise her with another one... it is called "a tea party for vickie" where all her daughters and her granddaughter are present... this is the first illustration that i've done with more than two characters- something that should be worked on more, though... the background [as always] was such a struggle... ramel and i even toughed out the snow storm to go to target looking for more paper... call me dedicated, crazy, or unsatisfied, as i have enough paper to NOT have to buy another sheet...

Small_painted_nails_2

remember this one?! these are the two same characters in the first illustration... emma and sage... it takes practice to make sure that all the characters remain consistent in a children's book [although none of these are for that purpose].... i see where improvement needs to be made... maybe i should practice more all together instead of cleaning non stop and playing video games... with snow, kids, and the xbox so close at hand, laziness has settled in... but you heard me complain of this before, right?!

Small_vicki_pregnant_2

still, may i just go off on a tangent for a second?! i've seriously wanted to work on art for some weeks now... i haven't gotten much of anything done, and as time flies past, the guilt grows and grows... christmas day we came home early and i was sooooo ready to bust out some amazing art... but the kid's room was a mess and all their new toys needed a perfect spot... instead of working on art, i cleaned their room, rearranged furniture, and put away too small of clothes... all the 12mos clothes [for isabella] were washed [thanks to ramel] and stored in my closet for when she gets bigger... i didn't have to clean that day.... but yet, i DID... who else would organize their toys by genre, species, and size?! who else would hang up their clothes? who else would get on their hands and knees to vaccum their carpet?! who else would map out the best way to fix their room even though she is not a home decorator?!

Small_nursing_vicki_2

ramel even said he was tired from watching me clean up that day... and everywhere i looked, there was SOMETHING ELSE OUT OF PLACE... there was something else to pick up... of course, when diego and isabella get older they will be cleaning their room themselves [AND JUST AS GOOD AS ME- i was never allowed to have a messy room and goodness, i  can completely understand why!!!!!!] this is how most days are... and it seems like my job has gotten harder! it took me a bit to figure out why... with isabella crawling, she is the one messing up most of toys, pulling down my coasters and bringing toys to rooms without picking up... i CANNOT STAND TO HAVE TOYS LAYING AROUND IN THE LIVING ROOM.... OR ANY OTHER ROOM, FOR THAT MATTER... after all, didn't i spend precious time CREATING a spot FOR those toys?! understandably, she is 8mos old so she cannot put her toys away YET... so then its my obligation to pick it up... it's my obligation to clean... sigh...

12796414full

so playing halo and killing a few people [and dying even more times than that] is relaxing... i don't have to clean up anything... the dead bodies in the screen magically disappear... the bullet casings are magically swept away... my halo girl doesn't need to shave her legs or pick up toys... she doesn't have to do dishes, or even eat!!!! all she has to do is beat down a few fellows and try not to fall off a cliff...

how did this post go from tea party illustrations to halo again?! all the illustrations [except for the last one, which is my character in halo] is of vickie and her family...

as christmas came and went...

Pict0577

it seemed like it was only last week when all the christmas decorations were put up in the house... the stockings were hung up with care in hopes that st. nick would be there... after all, he does have a few entry ways to get in thanks to the squirrels who are burrowing in... it was a wonderful christmas this year with isabella as the new babe in the house... i can't believe that she's taking steps and nearly walking by now... she sure didn't get any teeth for christmas [but hey, who needs teeth when you're 8mos old!?]... she is thisclose to running after her cousin nana and brother diego...

Pict0564

speaking of diego, the kid got his own "xbox" for christmas... it's really the v-smile learning system... we also got him the smartbook that goes along with the system... a few games to choose from, and this boy is utterly happy playing on his own game console... boy, kids these days are blessed!! i mean, we didn't get an atari system until i was 13yrs old and by then the system was over a decade old [which i still have and am saving]... it's amazing to see how much diego learns daily... he is growing up [sniffle]...

Pict0600

diego received several other goodies including avatar toys, a spiderman lamp, and a couple transformers toys... isabella received peek-a-blocks, a vtech rhyme and discover book, and these classic fisher price toys... of course, they are remakes of the originals and should definitely meet all safety guidelines [as older toys seem to fail]... their room has been rearranged to fit all new toys conveniently... it's

Pict0598

lastly, here are a couple decapitated gingerbread cyclop bears... [say that five times fast] they were taken with my new camera [that has a flash]... sadly, i didn't get anything for ramel yet for christmas... maybe a bit of illustration sales and he will get an unforseen surprise?! still, wouldn't it be nice if one day, i make a big enough sale to tell him "look honey, i paid our mortgage this month" or perhaps even "look baby pie, i paid off our property taxes, which goodness gracious, we know how high these wisconsin taxes are"... in the meantime, it's time to brew another pot of coffee so there is enough energy to make a sale big enough to buy him lost season 3 [hehehe]...

how was your christmas???

a very merry merry christmas to you

Pict0270

much love from ramel, ellia, diego, isabella, sam, and logan- the entire hill family...

p.s. thank you all for the lovely cards, emails, and letters...  tomorrow, i will email you all :) [and blog]

many apologies

hello my fellow readers- i am truly sorry for the prolonged delay of blogging... i have a thousand and one excuses but i'll try and narrow it down for you...

Pict0495

1. i haven't done much art lately because the mood hasn't been there... however, i did manage to create a teeny wee bit... yeah, just a wee bit... xmen playing xbox 360 while getting x-rayed...

2. my computer is in need of repair... yes, that same lovely computer ramel gave me... i guess the logic board burnt out from adding too many big art programs on it... a new computer is on its way but in the meantime, i was bummed at losing my dear electronic friend... i was too stubborn to use ramel's [the one that i've only been using for the past 3yrs] but it was time to blog and email so we are back on the imac...

Pict0504

3. we visited my mom a couple times- she always cheers me up and my dad always cooks yummy food for us all... we always leave her house with a ton of goodies... last time, i left with retro christmas decorations, ornaments, food, dessert, and toys for isabella... oh, and she gave me a ton of old christmas records including bing crosby's christmas and also alvin and the chipmunks... [note: diego is wearing a stocking knitted hat, like the boy from the christmas story... it was mine in college... diego and isabella are in the playpen... my dad is in the back holding daisy... and my mom's house is full of retro goodness]

Pict0537

4. isabella is desperately trying to walk... she has taken about 7 zombie style steps [hands straight out and wobbling]...  she lets go of our hands now to reach for furniture... and she likes to squat... i am pretty sure she will be walking within the next couple of weeks...

5. ramel is getting a website up...  while he isn't nervous about creating it, he needs time to make this... i've been dying to tell you all this for over a month now... he will be blogging and doing art... i can't tell you his theme or anything but trust me, it's quite ramel-ish :) it's such an exciting event!

Pict0467

6. i have an official website too...  well, i have the name registered and the space for it too... but i am clueless as to how to make a website so with nervousness, i delay in getting that up... my new site will have a shop, portfolio, blog, and contact info all in one... so we won't have a ton of links for this greenbeanbaby... i am looking to get that up within the next month... by the way, does anyone know how to merge a blog to their site?!

7. i bought more paper... didn't need it per se but it was a way to boost my energy and mojo to create some artwork... today would have been the perfect day to do so but it's soooooo cold outside.... and with our drafty windows, several rooms in the house are extremely cold including my studio and the living room... according to the weather channel, it's 19º F/ -7ºC [but feels like 1ºF/ -17ºC]... i'd rather snuggle up than work on art with cold fingers and worrying about my glue freezing [hehe]...

Pict0479

8. i put up the rest of my christmas decorations... christmas is only two days away and this was the first year that i took so darn long to complete such a task... i need a new tree and more garland... my cats have a tendency of attacking it and every year, my garland gets shorter and shorter... they don't mess with my ornaments and i am glad the kids don't either... we have been listening to christmas cds, records, and watching christmas movies... i wish i had a few movies on dvd though [the classics like it's a wonderful life, the christmas carol original, the muppets christmas carol, and white christmas]...

ok, that is all i can think of right now... however, i vow to blog more frequently! that is my new years resolution [along with get my website up and running and finish the children's book illustrations] i don't want to lose you readers! you all are so encouraging and supportive and it's been such a wonderful experience to be a part of blogland... i will post again christmas day but in case i miss you all, merry christmas, happy holidays, and happy december 25th...

where has the snowmen gone?

Pict0412_2

did you know that blogging can be a lot of work?! indeed it is, especially when you spent a good hour typing it all up only to lose every word written... your browser unexpectedly quits, or maybe your computer battery dies without giving you notice... either way, what i blogged about earlier today is long forgotten so thus a new post [with a few old ramblings]...

the above illustration is a gift to someone, re-vamped from an older illustration [of an even older illustration]... it took me longer than usual to make as my energy to work on art has been depleted... i am like my phone and computer battery- nearly dead and in need of recharging... it's hard to function this way... i have a family to care for, a house to clean, mouths to feed, fish to cook, noodles to boil, and emails to write... while i miss working on art, i miss having the energy more so.... maybe the weather contributes to such feelings... or maybe it's having so much to do and not enough strength to do it all...

Pict0002_2

the past couple of weeks, isabella was sick... from upset stomach to a bad cough to a body rash and onto a face rash... top that with teething and you have a colicky baby girl who wants to be held all the time and never put down... isabella is a a firm believer that the playpen and the crib are not suitable places for a baby to recuperate even when her mother is desperately trying to get the other sibling on the school bus... green bean mama should have some killer biceps by now!

Pict0427_2

baby girl, as she is known as here at home, is doing much better... her being sick coincided with our snow storms [yes, plural] so we were stuck at home for awhile... she was finally well enough to go outside and to the mall [as another snow storm approached]... we decided to get her ears pierced for christmas... i know, sounds a tad cruel to pierce a baby's ears just after feeling better and on top of that, give her a gift that is a wee painful... despite her loud wails, she did just fine and seems not to notice the earrings... she sure looks like a doll.. and she seems to bat her long lashes a li'l bit more now too [or is it my imagination?!]

Pict0338

diego is---- diego... sweet, active, happy, challenging, curious, and insisting on letting us know what he does and doesn't like... while it's great for kids to express themselves, i find it irrelevant if he doesn't want to take a bath... some days i will explain to him that i don't wanna do a lot of things but we have to... and so, he has to too... he is always jumping or running or wanting to play on the computer... he enjoys playing with baby girl... diego isn't always fond of eating and it worries me if he is getting enough nutrition... if he cannot spell onomatopoeia, is it because he isn't eating enough veggies??! if he can't tell me the square root of 144, is it because he is low on iron?! okay, i'm slightly exaggerating and had to use spell check to even write the word [unless, i am not getting enough veggies???!!!!] either way, it takes much energy to keep up with diego and isabella...

Pict0300

well, this blog only took me the whole day to write... from start to finish, i managed to miss diego's school bus, crash the computer after nearly finishing the first version of this blog [and shed a tear or two], cook a dinner, clean the house, bathe the boy and read to him, get isabella down for a nap, cut a bit of paper, down a pot of coffee, and daydream of sleeping right when isabella squirms awake... so if this blog sounds flustery, you know why... thank goodness for a new day and a fresh start...

how was your monday???

love from kerry...

Pict0161

blogging has been sporadic [due to unforseen circumstances] but the internet love hasn't stopped flowing... i was in the 2nd annual handmade holiday swap and  the other week kerry sent me such a beautiful package... the wrapping alone was dreamy, and of course, on top of the wrapped goodies, there was a bag of dark chocolates... kerry said i could wait until christmas to open it, but there was no resisting...

Pict0171

after carefully opening the packages [and saving the wrapping paper] i discovered kerry's beautiful handmade earrings! the brown and blue earrings are glass and oh so elegant!!!! the silver earrings are dainty too and match any sor to outfit... they are also comfy to wear [as you know, comfy is key when you have a baby girl who wants to rip dangles from your ears]... i never had so many darling earrings in my life and wish i had places to show them off :) maybe a new haircut will do the trick?! [and a bit of dye to cover up those pesky gray hairs- yep, you read that right]...

Pict0166

to match the earrings, kerry made this BEAUTIFUL scarf!! i mean, its truly elegant and also quite comfortable... she used kathy's tutorial and it is really made with care, quality, and delicacy... out of the two times i've been out of the house, i've gotten compliments on the scarf.... people are surprised it's handmade and are crazy about the color combination.... i love wearing handmade goodness and being able to tell others about the wonderful bloggers i'm honored to have swapped with... i only wish i had business cards from everyone to just give out and say "she made this- check it out"... hehe...

kerry sent such a sweet package and is patiently waiting for mine... yep, i fell behind on swapping and feel like  a horrible person [especially after writing that one post]... tomorrow i will give you all my excuses but seriously, all reasons aside, kerry has been so sweet and darling... she is truly a wonderful swapper and i am so grateful to have met her :)

cookies for the holidays

Imag0074

does your mouth ever fiend for  a sweet, buttery, and homemade cookie? do you try to make a batch only to discover that your oven doesn't work properly? perhaps, you have a loved one who has this same problem and you don't have the time [or skill] to make your own cookies for a present... either way, look no further, i found the most delectable cookie around!! well, actually, they found me...

miss angie of meliandangi have a wonderful new company... they make the most beautiful and delightful tasting cookies ranging in colors and designs... their website alone is to drool for... angie was sweet enough to send diego and i samples of their button sized cookies.... they came so beautifully packaged and were just so pretty to eat...

Cookies_2

did i mention how yummy they were? the photo above only shows a couple of the cookies she sent... the rest were eaten before my old camera had time to juice up... diego came home from school that day and was estactic to eat a green cookie with the letter "d" on it... and he thought they were just yummy yummy too... by the time ramel came home, there was only  a half a cookie left [and would've liked more]....

meliandangi cookies would make a perfect holiday gift... they are reasonably priced and definitely beautiful for any party, as well... you can also check out their new blog, and meet miss meli... so in case your oven is broken, or you have a person on your christmas list with a sweet tooth, or maybe getting a party together, don't forget about these delightful cookies.... they are truly delicious and made with care and love...

thanks so much angie for giving the greenbean family a taste of your goodness...

Art vs Craft: Part 1178

Tn_supevscaptmarveljpg_500375_pix_5

Hello all.  Greenbeanbaby and Isabella are under the weather so Diego and I are blogging in their absence.  This is her husband, Ramel checking in.  Diego is on our other mac playing some PBS kids games, but he told me he is working too, so he can get some credit on this post.

The topic of the today is one many have discussed, and argued about.  (Hence the part 1178)  I know Ellia and myself have engaged in some pretty heavy debates over this topic as well.

My stance on the issue has been swayed some since marrying a craft person who is also an artist.  I will be honest, in the beginning I was one sided.  As an artist I viewed craft work as a option for people who couldn't create things themselves.  I viewed crafters as second class artist.  You could imagine how this would infuriate Ellia.  My arguments were based on what I knew about craft.  Which was very little.  Craft in my mind was macoroni necklaces and cut out googly eyes.

For me...this was craft:

Grdhogjpg_521545_pixels

Created by Miss Susan from www.kckpl.lib.ks.us/YS/crafts/GRDHOGPT.HTM

Honest and truly that was craft in my eyes.  The even mention of the word craft brought up images of hot glue guns and yarn.  Now greenbean fought hard to convince me that craft was just as important as traditional art, and that people who craft are just as talented as artist.  Seeing my wife work first hand has helped me personally shake some of the negative views attached to the word crafter.  However every artist doesn't have the luxury to be married to and artist and craft-person.

I mean to say someone is a crafts-person....is that a cut?  Would you rather be viewed as an artist or a person who crafts.  Does it really matter when it comes down to the end product being created?  I believe there are craftsmen and women who take their work very serious who can crank out beautiful jewelery, handbags, greeting cards, etc...that make some so called artist looked "second-hand."  However...as much as I would love their work, it would be hard for me to call jewelry, art.

example:

http://image.orientaltrading.com/otcimg/48_3686.jpg

from www.orientaltrading.com/products/C342843.jsp

This is beautiful...plain and simple...in my opinion at least...but I would still not call this art.
The person who created this is very talented, and has a skill above the average person, otherwise they wouldn't be selling these items.  The act of making an item such as this is very artistic, but I wouldn't say the person is an artist based on this item alone.

Is there anything wrong with being a crafter?  Craftswomen and men need to stand tall, unite and celebrate the work they create.  There shouldn't be a rush to defend the word craft.

A person who goes out and purchases items such as beads, wire, and other trinkets, and fashions them together in my mind maybe creative but not an artist...once again just my opinion.  Now a person who creates things from scratch, burns and pours the metals, burns and shapes the wire....that person is definitely an artist.

But wait...what about the artist who buys canvas, and purchases paint???  That person still creates, mixes, blends themselves, and there is nothing you can buy, that will paint, sculpt, or draw for you.  Sure there are tools that will enhance artist ability, but not change what they can create.

So who wins?

The two categories really cannot be compared.

I think the debate will rage on forever...but I think new arguments need to arise.  Why can't crafts be crafts and art be art.  Why is there such a need to merge the two different realms in which people  create.  Why can't we all just get along?  (Had to throw that one in there)  One main topic in the discussion should be artist having a greater respect for the word crafts.  I know many artist and craftswomen and craftsmen  read this  blog, so give  me your opinions on this topic.

just added

there are a couple of new categories in the blog now... ramel's ramblings is a category dedicated to posts written by him.... multi-task is a category with a mix of topics that involve life with children while managing to work on art... lastly, i've added the debatable category, as these are posts of strong opinion and not of pure fact...
